Olympic Associates
Project Scheduling, including Schedule Review and Development
The Challenge
Franklin Pierce School District of Tacoma, Washington, working with their architect,
developed a thirteen month project schedule for the renovation of one of the district's
high schools. A significant constraint identified during the scheduling process was that
only two of the eighteen buildings on campus would be available to the contractor at
any one time. The task for Olympic Associates and Bluewater
was to analyze the schedule and to offer a realistic work plan incorporating that
constraint.
The Process
Using Microsoft Project 2000 to schedule the work, Bluewater identified
the work activities and then tied them to a detailed work plan narrative. The work plan
narrative described the activity sequence, the estimated durations and the
responsibilities of each of the team members.
The Results
Based on the work plan and project schedule prepared by Bluewater,
Olympic Associates convinced the Franklin Pierce School District to revise the
contractual documents to include the work plan and extend the time of completion
from thirteen months to twenty-one months, avoiding the probability of claims
being brought against the school district by the construction contractors.
